Not too bad a drive for a change. Left at 7, Bangor travelodge at just after 11.
Left carpark by 10:40. No snow at all in the valley, and only patches visible on the tops. Nice easy stroll up past Gladstone rock and the mine workings. 2 hours or so to the col at about 800m on the south-east ridge to Y Lliwedd. Starting to get more snow cover although still fairly patchy. Left turn and along and up the side of the ridge just down from the top; quite sheltered from wind so not too cold. Up to meeting of Rhyd Ddu path (south ridge) and a short steep climb up to summit. Total snow/ice cover from here on and well below freezing I think; I put crampons on, Michael just continued with the iceaxe but needed crampns for the descent.
About 20+ people or so on the summit -- so hardly crowded at all. Cafe closed.
Back the same way as getting rather late - and got to carpark by 5:20pm in almost complete darkness.
